My Zero Waste Toiletry Kit
Handmade in Taiwan, I use the 100% biodegradable Feel Good Bamboo Toothbrush from Frangipani. Made with a bamboo handle and horsehair bristles, it has a low environmental impact when compared to wood which has a longer growth period. Bamboo is the fastest growing plant in the world without the need of fertilisers nor pesticides. The horse-hair is also cruelty-free as they’re obtained without harm to horses by cutting off from their mane. This toothbrush also comes in conscious packaging: recycled paper carton printed with eco-friendly soy ink. Despite being free from heavy metals, formaldehyde, sulphur dioxide, fluorescent agents, bleach and preservatives, these toothbrushes are SGS-certified and passed antibacterial testing. As caution however, sterilise the bristles by soaking it in hot water for 5 minutes before initial use.
Handmade in Malaysia, I use the Solid Toothpaste Mint from Frangipani that is made out of 100% natural ingredients which are 70% organic (coconut oil, peppermint essential oil and mint essential oil). Vegan and cruelty-free, it is also free from fluoride and triclosan. Did you know 98% of Europe chose not to add fluoride to their drinking water? There’s no need for it to be in our toothpastes either. Packaged in a reusable stainless steel box, this toothpaste is travel-friendly with no risk of leaks nor issues at the airport (cheers to one more less thing to transfer into a 100ml jar)! So, how do you use a solid toothpaste? Gently pass wet toothbrush on it and brush your teeth, it’ll foam when brushing. There’s no need to pack on a lot of product as a little goes a long way. More importantly, keep the box opened after use to let it dry, but close it during travels.
As recommended by my dentist, I’m saving up money for the Philips Sonicare Rechargeable Airfloss Interdental White from Harvey Norman. It’s a rechargeable electronic floss which uses pressurised air and water to clean gums and between teeth, saving you the pain of flossing the traditional way. Easy to use operating on a single touch of a button, it only takes 30 seconds to floss your entire set of pearly whites.
Shampoo + Soap
I can generally use any shampoo bar but my husband’s favourite to add more volume and curly texture while preventing hair loss is the Hair Fall Shampoo Bar from Frangipani which last I heard is discontinued unfortunately. I’ve decided to write a positive review anyway to encourage Frangipani to bring it back in stock (you heard me Frangipani, bring this triple-threat back please). Handmade in Malaysia using 100% natural ingredients which out of these are 65% organic (avocado oil, castor oil, rosemary essential oil, geranium oil, shikakai powder, brahmi powder, beeswax and cornstarch), this shampoo is biodegradable and safe as it is non-polluting when used in rivers, lakes or oceans (if only I had these back in my camping days). I love that it’s also cruelty-free and free from sulphate, sls, paraben, silicon, alcohol, mineral oil and palm oil too. Packaged in recycled and biodegradable materials, this shampoo is a solid for being a travel-friendly companion as well.
Handmade in Malaysia, I use the Organic Handmade Deodorant Woodsy from Frangipani which is made using 100% natural ingredients out which are 73% organic (arrowroot, cocoa butter, coconut oil, cedar wood essential oil and vetiver essential oil). It’s vegan, cruelty-free and also free from aluminium, paraben, alcohol, mineral oil and palm oil. Packaged in recycled and biodegradable materials, this woodsy scent is another travel-friendly addition (you can easily pop this in your handbag and you have a perfume bar/deodorant on the go)! So how do you use it? Apply on wet underarms after showering or wet the deodorant first before applying it on dry underarms.
I’ve used the Detangling Comb from The Body Shop for years and have bought two to keep one in the shower and one by my bedside. Made out of wood, this gentle and wide-toothed comb can detangle wet and dry hair without splitting ends. I also use it to distribute oil treatments from the root to tip (a head massage before bed in just a few swifts).
In my previous blog post on treating hair loss, I mentioned using oils as a pre-shampoo and hair growth treatment. I’ve stopped using coconut oil and opted for castor oil recently which I now swear by. Castor oil is known to help hair grow faster, thicker, stronger and shinier. I personally use it on my lashes, brows and scalp and have not looked back since. You can buy unpackaged Castor Oil from The Hive.
Firstly, I use the Freedom Cups Mini from Frangipani for the most of my period. Designed in Singapore and made in the USA, this menstrual cup is inserted much like a tampon and sits at the base of the cervix collecting menstrual fluid. Menstrual cups are also eco-friendly and economical as it lasts 15 years, being made of 100% medical-grade silicone. Did you know in an average woman’s lifetime, between 10,000 to 15,000 soiled pads and tampons end up in landfills? Save your wallet and the planet with this period changer ladies! I love how the cup is also free from plastic, mineral oil, polyethylene, polypropylene, sulphur dioxide and pesticides — all of which are usually found in pads and tampons. I raise my glass to this leak-free and time-saving miracle (no more washing stinky pads)! The mini size is suitable for first-timers and for me, it lasts all day long without the need to empty my cup until I reach home from work. Plus, with each purchase, 1 Freedom Cup is offered to a woman in need. Keep note however to sterilise the cup before and after your period (although this is not necessary every time you empty the cup out). Simply get a porcelain bowl, place the cup inside, pour hot water to submerge it and remove. Then, store it in the cotton pouch provided, somewhere cool and dry. Secondly, I keep one Eco Femme Washable Cloth Pad from Frangipani in my bag as an emergency pad. This is because for me personally, it’s hard to squat and be comfortable in small-spaced and dirty public toilets to insert a menstrual cup should my period come unexpectedly. This pad is made in India using natural, unbleached organic cotton flannel top and a PUL leakproof layer (you can also choose the option without if you feel very strongly against PUL). Similar with the Freedom Cup, each purchase of this pad gifts 1 eco femme pad to an Indian girl through the Eco Femme Pad for Pad programme.
